Marriage Documents

Hello,

I have a question about marriage documents, and what is being accepted.

As per the manual, acceptable documents are the long- or short-form marriage certificate.

On the student side, it says this as well, but further lists documents that would not be accepted include the "non-registered marriage license."

Have you come across a student submitting a certified copy of the marriage license, with the bottom part signed by the Registrar General's office? There is a section that says "I am satisfied to the correctness of this statement and register this marriage." Would you accept this document, even though it is the license and not the certificate?

Our stance has been to approve the certificates only, or to waive it for one study period with an affidavit so they can obtain the certificate. I believe a license was approved once and came up on an audit, but don't know if that bottom section about it being registered had come up.

Thanks!

Thanks all. I definately have a better understanding now; I had no idea that is what the long-form certificate was, and expected it to be a seperate document labeled as a certificate.

I believe part of this goes back to what was brought up in the conference - if we are supposed to know this well enough to spot suspicious documents, perhaps we should have resources available that provide descriptions or even visual examples of the acceptable documents.
