New SIN

Hey Folks, I learned something today, so I thought I'd share in case others were unaware like I was:

When a student is a Protected Person (PP) aka Refugee, then obtains Permanent Resident (PR) status, they have to apply for a new SIN themselves, it's not automatic. I thought it was automatic, but it's an extra step required by the student to do it.

I just encountered this for the first time today where a student was granted PR status in 2022, but got a new permanent SIN issued today. Just so happens we had a SIN clinic (someone from Service Canada) onsite so I stopped by to confirm, and they said yes, it is definitely a by request process, as they need to vet the person's credentials.

Makes sense: IRCC vs ESDC, not the same, so not automatic.

It had just seemed to be so seamless for all others (new SIN appeared to have happened simultaneously with PR) that I never even thought about it.
