A few questions about BSWD

Hi all,

I was off over the past year so wasn't able to attend any BSWD working group meetings. We are looking at improving our internal processes and I have some questions for this group!

Our SAS office has raised concerns that our BSWD funding is quite low compared to their colleagues. Prior to covid we had about $40-50K per year. Now, we have around $16K. We were able to ask for more money one year, but that didn't translate into continued additional funds. How much are other institutions receiving for BSWD?

I am also curious what your staff to BSWD recipient ratio is and how involved SAS is in the the day to day financial and document management. How does that compare to your staff complement involved in Financial Aid and Awards? Like all things related to financial aid and awards, volume of manual work is increasing and the…

BSWD receipts

Good afternoon,

A few of us here are going back on forth on this issue with online orders and proof of receipts. Wondering what everyone is doing from other schools. This student has provided a Best Buy order receipt/summary with a shipment date of Feb. 7 after ordered placed, do you ask for additional documents to confirm the item has been delivered to the student or just accept the attached image provided? In the manual it does say to obtain proof of shipment. Thanks in advance. Maria

I would treat this similar to the Costco receipts that sometimes do not list the item as delivered but pending delivery. They should be able to get the vendor to provide a current receipt that shows confirms shipment was delivered or at least an email that confirms they don't provide that specific info on a receipt but can confirm it was delivered to the applicant and when.

BSWD meeting today?

Is there a meeting of the working group today at 10:00?

YES! Sorry, I lost track of time and was having tech issues connecting.

BSWD Rationale

What do other FAO offices do when it comes to BSWD applications and letters of rationale from their Disability Services Office. The manual sets us up for interpretation issues (as always). Do you just accept the box that was checked on Section D/page 7 of the application and not require the actually written rationale from the DSO office? Help! :-)

Hi Kathy

It depends.. if the DVF includes information about what is required, I don't specifically ask for an additionale rationale. Depending on what is being requested, our ALC office will include in my folder with the application their rationale. But... there are times when they don't include one for me but i know they have all of their rationale in their files... and if I am ever concerned about what is being requested, we have a very open communication back and forth until we are both satisfied.

Any request that we can't agree on (or that the student is asking for but they don't agree with) we send to the Ministry for a decision.
