Residency and Work Permits

Hi all,

We are wondering how other instutions treat residency reviews when a student indicates they have been in Canada on a work permit prior to studies.

The manual indicates that time on a work permit "is counted toward the 12 months of residency if there is no break between the expiration of their Work Permit and when they gain Citizenship, Protected Person or Permanent Resident status in Canada." However, the History of Canadian Residency form does not ask for the dates on the permit and the manual does not indicate we should be requesting the permit for review.

In these cases does your do you request a copy/copies of the work permit(s) to esnure there was no break between them before approving the residency? OR does your intsitution accept the information as entered on the History of Canandian Residency from, and presuming the SIN check passes, allow the app or process without requesting the document?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Shaun, no need to bring to Exec, I had brought this up in the Nov Exec meeting and gave some additional info about residency through follow-up, but it never made its way onto the joint agenda so I emailed Krista yesterday the 31st. Maybe it gets added on our next joint for discussion.

I had also put it in the conference survey for an MCU topic.
